The fascinating world of HPMC
Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) is a chemically modified cellulose polymer that is off-white in colour and considered safe for human consumption.
It has many applications in the food, construction and pharmaceuticals industry. It is used as a substitute for gluten, an adhesive in construction, a coating for supplement capsules and is a treatment for dry eyes, in eye drop solution.
Applications in Ophthalmology
HPMC 2.0% is a clear dispersive viscoelastic. It protects and lubricates delicate cells and tissues of the human eye during a range of ophthalmic surgical procedures including:
- Cataract surgery.
- Intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.
- Glaucoma surgery.
- Corneal transplant.
HPMC 2.0% facilitates eye surgery as it helps maintain a deep, stable anterior chamber during IOL implantation. It coats and protects the corneal endothelial cells during a procedure. When applied to the surface of the eye it enhances visualisation.
