Surgitrac Instruments is excited to introduce Medicel’s new product range, terralution, featuring sustainable single-use IOL injectors and surgical instruments, such as I/A handpieces, designed to meet the highest medical standards for user performance and patient safety. This innovative product line will revolutionise ophthalmic surgery by offering environmentally friendly solutions without compromising on quality or performance.

Medicel, a market leader in IOL injectors and premium injection systems based in Altenrhein, Switzerland, demonstrates that single-use can be more sustainable than ever before. Unveiled at the 2024 European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) Congress, the terralution range combines cutting-edge technology with eco-conscious design.

BICEL terralution

One standout product is the BICEL terralution, a sustainable bimanual I/A handpiece that merges the best properties of Medicel’s existing product ranges into one environmentally friendly solution. The track-proven aeroplane shape of the cannulas and the ergonomic grip design of the new handpiece ensure intuitive, comfortable handling and precise control during use. The BICEL is compatible with a luer connector and is available in preferred sizes (23G and 21G) with colour coding for easy identification.

Compared to reusable I/A handpieces, BICEL generates 47% less CO2 emissions per surgery. Medicel manufactures these handpieces from bio-based, high-performance materials and designs them with 36% smaller packaging and 20% lower box weight. Their compact design allows shipping 90 boxes in the same space as 51, streamlining logistics and reducing storage needs.

DUALCEL terralution

The DUALCEL terralution is equally impressive, producing 51% less CO2 emissions per surgery compared to reusable injectors. It features a smaller carbon footprint and a 22% smaller design compared to its predecessor, while maintaining the same high performance. Additionally, the Dualcel Injector’s box weight is 25% lighter, making it more efficient for storage and shipping.

Medicel makes the injector from bio-based, high-performance materials and package it in an eco-friendly blister pack, further reducing CO2 emissions. The smaller packaging allows the shipment of more products in a single box (56 boxes vs. 40), reducing logistics costs and environmental impact.

Swiss made

Both the BICEL I/A handpieces and DUALCEL injectors benefit from eco-friendly packaging made from grass paper, which results in energy savings of up to 80% during production. The Swiss-made products will be manufactured in Altenrhein, where most production steps take place locally, significantly reducing the need for time-consuming transport and unnecessary shipping. Furthermore, the use of sustainable energy sources, including local hydropower, ensures that the manufacturing process remains eco-conscious.

While the terralution range is not yet available for purchase, it will be coming soon, providing ophthalmologists around the world with a sustainable, high-performance alternative to traditional reusable surgical instruments.
